  17. <p>     "Optoelectronic integrated circuit" may sound like high-tech
  18. mumbo jumbo, but Texas Instruments is betting that it will soon
  19. be as familiar a term as computer chip. Last week the
  20. Dallas-based electronics firm announced the development of the
  21. first OEIC, a chip that transmits information not through the
  22. cumbersome contemporary method of electrons passing along
  23. silicon pathways, but rather through the simplest medium of all:
  24. light.

  26. <p>     When the light chip reaches the marketplace, sometime
  27. within the next 10 years, it will be more compact and up to 20
  28. times as fast as its silicon equivalent. Result: electronic
  29. equipment that is quicker, smaller and cheaper, in everything
  30. from cars to kitchens to wristwatches. The race for a light chip
  31. has been under way for years, and though Texas Instruments is
  32. the first to produce one, it still hasn't crossed the real
  33. finish line: practical consumer application.
